Bagatelle are an Irish rock band formed in 1978. They are well known for their hits such as Summer In Dublin and Second Violin. Some refer to the band as “Liam Reilly and Bagatelle”, as lead vocalist, songwriter and pianist for the band Liam Reilly is a well known Irish musician in his own right. Bassist Ken Doyle and past guitarist John O'Brien were part of a group from the mid-1970’s called the “Boulder Band”, who were a Blues Rock band. After the band split up in August of 1978 Doyle and O'Brien began rehearsing with another member of the Boulder Band under the name “Bagatelle”, though the name was later changed to Boulder Band again. Eventually, they abandoned the name and adopted the name Bagatelle as originally planned. Liam Reilly joined the band and moved them in a more pop direction, which made Marian Bryne, past vocalist, unhappy. She proceeded to leave the band and later emigrated to the USA and decided not to return to the band. In late 1978 Bagatelle was then signed to Polydor Records. This marked the beginning of the band’s success. Liam Reilly gave Bagatelle their signature sound, though he departed from the band in 1988 to launch a solo career that never achieved the same kind of success Bagatelle had. Reilly reached somewhat of a nadir in 1990 when he entered the Eurovision Song Contest and came in joint second place with his entry “Somewhere In Europe”. Shortly after this, he returned to Bagatelle. While Liam Reilly was focusing on his solo career bassist Ken Doyle temporarily left the band. During this period, Bagatelle became a quintet fronted by vocalist Derek Jordan, bassist Martin Bryne, pianist Paul Finlay and guitarist John O'Brien. This lineup played on the “Just Another Lover” single recorded live at the Mean Fiddler in 1989. Bagatelle’s final show in Northern Ireland took place on Feburary 7th 2016. Though the band will continue to play in the Republic of Ireland they will no longer be playing live in the North of Ireland. For a period of time Bagatelle had guitarist Gavin Ralston playing with them, and he played at live shows. Though according to Doyle, Gavin is currently recovering from cancer. Fellow Irish musician Bono has commented on the impact that Bagatelle had on U2 in the early days of their career. Larry Mullen, of the same band, once famously said that he used to call them “Baga-Money”, in reference to their fame, and that he wished that his band could be as successful as them.
